Ever wonder how Cozumel became so popular for tourists? I mean it is very popular but there are still plenty of people that I have met that have never heard of Cozumel. At times some don’t believe it is actually a part of Mexico! Well, today’s article we will delve a little deeper into how Cozumel became a booking tourist destination and how it has impacted the island.
How did Cozumel get so popular?
Cozumel has been a popular and ever growing favorite for tourist for decades now. Do you know just how long ago it was that Cozumel began receiving tourists? Now I know that most people attribute the tourist industry in Cozumel to Jacques Cousteau, however, the birth of tourism in Cozumel didn’t have anything to do with Cousteau. Cozumel, for many many years, has been a desired island for different governments, trade industries and so forth.
Discovery of the island gem that Cozumel is was actually largely due in part to a nautical mishap that occurred in 1948. A freighter ship with a shipment of bananas on its way from Guatemala to Mobile Alabama actually was grounded on the Ixpalbarco point of Cozumel and the crew was forced to go ashore. They made their way to the town of San Miguel and found accommodations at the Hotel Playa and reported the incident to the ship’s owner back in New York. The Ship’s owner was Charles Fair and after receiving notice of the incident got on a plane and flew down to Cozumel to try and continue with the salvage operation. During his stay in Cozumel, he was very impressed by the island and promised to recommend Cozumel to his friends.
After returning to New York Mr. Fair did as he promised and recommended the island to friends and in particular to a writer and friend named John R. Humphreys. Humphreys would travel to the island for extended stays as he wrote a detailed article about cozumel tourismthe island which after a while was finally published in 1955 in Holiday Magazine. This was the beginning of tourism in Cozumel after more articles and divers began to visit the island it only continued to increase in popularity. Now Cozumel is one of the Top Cruise ship destinations in the Caribbean!
in 1961 Jacques Cousteau did bring international attention to Cozumel as he proclaimed it one of the top dive destinations worldwide. Once this happened Cozumel quickly transformed from a quiet little fishing town and into a Mecca for the popular underwater activity. This was the beginning of tourism in Cozumel after more articles and divers began to visit the island it only continued to increase in popularity. Now Cozumel is one of the Top Cruise ship destinations in the Caribbean!
